Easy and Delicious Southern Style Flaky Biscuits
Inside: the best, flaky homemade biscuit recipe that comes together quickly and is absolutely delicious.
I am so excited to share with you my family’s tried your biscuit recipe. I have been wanting to get this in a blog post for a long time so I’m excited to finally be sharing it.
I grew up on canned biscuits and had never made a biscuit from scratch when I got married. My husband on the other hand grew up in South Carolina with a southern-cooking mama who made many things from scratch, including biscuits. After we got married, I quickly realized I had some things to learn.
My husband’s love for biscuits runs deep and I set out to make the perfect biscuit. I began to experiment with biscuit recipes, and the right combination of ingredients to make the perfect, flaky biscuit, and I finally found it.
These biscuits are my husband’s favorite and it is always a good day when we start with biscuits. These biscuits also freeze well just for leftovers or making extras or for a quick breakfast.
This recipe is incredibly simple and just a few ingredients that you already have in your pantry. If you’re looking to stock your pantry and more basic ingredients on hand, check out this blog post where I share my pantry staples, as well as a free printable list you can download.
Simple Ingredients
Flour – I use unbleached all purpose for this recipe. Although I have used whole wheat flour or a combination of whole and unbleached flour, I find that all purpose unbleached flour gives them a lighter texture.
Butter – You cannot skimp on the butter for this. Make sure it’s good and cold for the flakiest biscuits.
Baking powder – Baking powder is the rising ingredient in these biscuits.
Salt – Salt adds flavor. My favorite is Redmond Real Salt and I like to purchase it through Thrive Market.
Egg – Just one egg in this recipe.
Milk – I often use regular milk, but if you have buttermilk, it levels up these biscuits even more.
That’s it! Just a few simple ingredients.
How to Make Baking Powder Biscuits
Start by mixing the dry ingredients into a medium glass bowl. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender. Alternatively, you can grate in your butter which makes it super easy to incorporate into the dry ingredients. This does work best if the butter is frozen, but you can do it with cold butter as well.
Once the butter is well worked in, add the egg and milk, stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together. Turn out onto the counter and knead it several times until the dough is soft and smooth.
Pat the dough out into a circle, about 1/2 inch thick. Using a 3-inch biscuit cutter or glass cup, cut out biscuits and place onto a baking sheet or stone.
Bake at 400 degrees for 17-20 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 7-9 large biscuits.
