The Best Sourdough Recipes for Everyday Baking
Inside: A round up of my favorite sourdough recipes that I reach for over and over.
Sourdough is just delicious, not to mention the incredible health benefits of long-fermenting the grains. I first started learning about sourdough long before it became trendy as I was beginning to make healthier food and product swaps in our home.
Over time, I learned just how much I enjoyed working with sourdough and the magic that is creating bread out of flour and water and salt. As we began eating more recipes with sourdough, I realized that the bloating and yucky feelings I had been having with traditional wheat products had disappeared.
After realizing just how much better my body handles sourdough, I began making almost 100% of our bread products with sourdough and long-fermenting the recipes. The result has been delicious food and a healthy and happy gut.
Just a sampling of the health benefits of sourdough:
- fermentation process of sourdough helps to break down the complex carbohydrates into simple sugars making the bread easier to digest
- fermentation also makes the nutrients more bio available, meaning the body is able to absorb the vitamins and minerals more easily
- sourdough has a lower glycemic index and releases the sugars more slowly, helping to prevent blood sugar spikes
- full of probiotics
- fermentation breaks down the protein gluten which makes it easier to digest, especially for those who are sensitive to gluten
Whether you’re an experienced sourdough girl or just beginning your journey and looking for some inspiration, I hope that this collection of recipes will give you some fresh ideas for all the wonderful things you can make with sourdough.

Sourdough Breads
Classic
Nothing beats a traditional artisan sourdough loaf. This is a great beginner recipe.
Sourdough Bagels
I keep saying this, but for real, once you have made sourdough breads, you won’t want to go back. Sourdough bagels are not exception and I have found them even easier than traditional yeast bagels.
Sandwich Bread
This sourdough sandwich bread is the lightest and fluffiest bread I have ever tasted, you don’t even know it’s sourdough! It’s perfect for lunch meat sandwiches and makes great toast too.
Sourdough Cheese Bread
I was blown away the first time I tried this cheddar cheese sourdough bread. The subtle garlic flavor with the swirls of cheese throughout was just amazing. Serve it fresh with an italian dish or toast it for breakfast, either way it’s delicious!
Brown Bread
Sourdough brown bread is another classic and is such a hearty bread with just a hint of molasses and honey. It’s great served warm with butter alongside a pot of soup or use it for sandwich bread or toast.

Simple Sourdough Breakfast
We love breakfast in our house and it is one of my favorite meals to incorporate sourdough. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, there are so many ways to use sourdough for breakfast and I’ve rounded up a few of our favorites.
Crepes
We absolutely LOVE crepes! I had made traditional crepe and they were alright, but these sourdough crepes are next level. I love that this recipe is full of eggs and milk, making them protein rich even as a sweeter breakfast.
I love to fill with fruit and top with whip cream OR fill with sweetened cream cheese and top with fruit sauce. Delicious either way!
Easy Egg Skillet
This recipe is a great one to have in your back pocket to use up excess sourdough discard. It’s great for breakfast, but works well as a quick supper recipe too.
To make the skillet meal, I simply preheat my cast iron skillet and once it is good and hot, I spread a thin layer of sourdough discard over it. Bake the crust for 3-5 minutes, just to barely set the discard. Sprinkle browned sausage, chopped veggies, and eggs on top and return to the oven to bake until set. Works well for a quick pizza crust too!
Pancakes
Sourdough pancakes are a treat and one thing that I love about them is that you can mix up the batter the night before and allow it to set overnight making breakfast prep that much faster in the morning. Win-win! For more overnight breakfast ideas, grab this free printable with three make-ahead breakfast recipes.
Cinnamon Rolls
Sourdough cinnamon rolls are just divine. I have actually started making mine into a braided bread rather than traditional rolls and we absolutely love it as there are more layers of cinnamon sugar and dough.
To make the braided version, follow the recipe as is, until you get to the point of having the dough rolled into a log. At this point, instead of cutting into slices, make one long cut down the middle of the log. Separate the two halves and then twist them together. Form into a wreath shape and then tuck the ends underneath. Bake as directed.
French Toast
We are big fans of french toast, even better when I can make it ahead of time in one pan like this sourdough french toast casserole. The cranberry version is festive and beautiful around the holidays, but you can easily leave out the fruit or substitute with something else.

Sourdough Snack Recipes
Lemon Blueberry Bread
For our preschool coffee and tea time I will often make a special treat to go along with our coffee and tea. During the spring and summer especially, this blueberry lemon bread is a fantastic quick bread to make for breakfasts or morning snack.
Crackers
You absolutely cannot go wrong with sourdough crackers. It is a great way to use up sourdough discard and I have often been guilty of saving discard to make crackers. We usually don’t even have to store these because we eat them up so quickly.
Sourdough crackers are delicious plain or you can add shredded cheese and herbs for an extra burst of flavor.
Soup Crackers
These sourdough soup crackers are a little more time consuming than the other crackers, but such a fun little treat to go along with soup.
Graham Crackers
If you’re jumping on the cracker train, these sourdough graham crackers are a hit with my little girl and I feel so much better letting her snack on these than the store bought versions.

Sourdough Staples
Tortillas
Just a warning here that once you start making your own tortillas you will not want to go back to the store bought ones. These are so good and really not hard to make. The longest part is just rolling out the dough into thin discs, but if you have a tortilla press it is easy enough.
Pie Crust
Some people get turned off at the idea of sourdough pie crust, but it really isn’t that sour. Make sure to use fresh starter for a lighter flavor profile as an older discard will produce a more sour flavor.
Hamburger Buns
This is another recipe that once you make your own, you won’t go back. Homemade hamburger buns hold together and hold a lot more toppings than traditional hamburger buns do.

Sourdough Main Dishes
Stromboli
Stromboli is an amazing easy main dish and so easy to customize with the meats, veggies, and cheese you have on hand.
Sourdough Dumplings
Sourdough dumplings are a great addition to your regular chicken and dumpling meal or any other brothy soup. Easy to throw together and a great way to use up the discard.
Cheddar Waffles
Putting this recipe here because these sourdough cheddar waffles make for excellent “sandwich bread”. I like to add diced jalaneno and use it for BLT sandwiches. So tasty!
The possibilities with sourdough are absolutely endless! The more I have worked with it, the more I realize how flexible and resilient it really is. I hope this blog post gives you some fresh inspiration for what to do with your sourdough! Let me know in the comments your favorite sourdough recipes!
