popsicles on a plate with limes and strawberries

During the long, hot days of summer there is something incredibly refreshing about an icy-cold fruit drink or treat. This three- ingredient strawberry lime slushie is the perfect, easy and healthy way to cool off during a summer afternoon.

Summer often hits hard and fast here and this summer is no different. We went from mild, gorgeous days to scorching hot temperatures with no warning. On the hottest days, we go outside for a breakfast picnic and play for a few hours before it gets too hot. This ham and broccoli egg casserole is great for a quick breakfast and would be easy to take outside.

Even still, we enjoy the pool, vegetable and cut flower garden, farmer’s market, and of course summer wheat harvest. There is beauty in every season if we stop and look for it. Check out my favorite essentials for summer here. With everything from pool accessories to picnic baskets you’ll be set for lots of summer fun outdoors.

What is a fruit slushie?

A fruit slushie is any combination of fruit and juice blended together until smooth. In the heat of summer, or any day really, we love a cold strawberry lime slushie to cool off. It’s a basic recipe and you could totally play around with other fruits and fruit juices until you find your favorite combination.

Slushie combinations to try:

  • Orange juice + frozen blueberries
  • Orange juice + frozen blueberries and mango
  • Cranberry juice + frozen mango
  • Apple juice + frozen raspberries

What are some other frozen snack ideas?

Maybe fruit popsicles aren’t your thing, but you still want a cold treat for summer. Here’s some other ideas to try:

  • Cookie ice cream sandwich – Make chocolate chip cookies from scratch. This is my favorite recipe. Sandwich your favorite ice cream between homemade cookies and then freeze for a delicious ice cream sandwich treat.
  • Cherry yogurt pops – If chocolate and cherry is a combination you love, check out these cherry yogurt pops. So easy and delish!
  • Chocolate peanut butter yogurt bars- If you love chocolate and peanut butter together, you will want to check out these healthy, homemade buster bars.

While you could, of course, buy popsicles from the grocery store, we prefer to make our own to avoid unnecessary additives and the excessive amounts of sugar and food dye in store bought versions. Homemade popsicles are delightfully simple to make with just a few simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand. I love this recipe because it is not only delicious as a slushie, but it also makes fantastic popsicles. Check out these fun popsicle molds.

What are the ingredients in strawberry lime slushies?

Strawberries – Frozen is really best here. If you choose to use fresh you will also need to add ice and I have found that this waters down the flavor of the slushie considerably.

Lime juice – Fresh or bottled work well. Personally I feel like fresh lime has a more robust flavor, but keeping a bottle of lime juice on hand is often a little easier than having fresh limes.

Honey – Just a little sweetener really pulls out the strawberry flavor and makes it pop. You could use whatever sweetener you prefer.

Tools you may need to make a strawberry lime slushie:

  • Any high power blender will do the trick. I use and love this one. The size is perfect for small amounts and it does a fantastic job of blending things nice and smooth.
