Do you have Christmas day food traditions? The first Christmas I was married, I came across a recipe for a Christmas star bread.
It was basically a brioche dough, rolled into circles and layered with homemade cranberry jam. The layers were then cut and the fingers twisted into a star shape before baking. The end result is a beautiful star shaped bread.
We always pair this with some form of protein. If you’ve been around here a minute, you know how important this is, but you can read more about why as well as some of my favorite ways to get more in my diet in this blog post.
This Christmas fruit slush is a recipe that was passed to me from my grandmother and I adapted it and added it to our Christmas menu, keeping the tradition going.
When I was a little girl I would go to my grandmother’s house several weeks before Christmas and help her prepare food for our extended family gathering. We would prepare several different food items and then freeze them for later.
This Christmas fruit slush was one of those recipes. I can remember helping her make a big batch of this and then setting aside a small cup to eat before freezing the rest.
I love that this recipe is such an easy way to incorporate a healthy and fresh dish into your Christmas day menu. I will usually serve this with our Christmas star bread and an egg casserole for breakfast and we often continue to snack on it throughout the day too.
Simple Ingredients
The original fruit slush recipe that I grew up with called for making a thick sugar syrup and mixing it with the fruit, making it a very sweet slush.
Over the years, I have cut back on the sugar until I just stopped adding the sugar syrup at all, and guess what?! It really doesn’t need the added sweetness.
I will share the basic ingredients that I use, but just know that this fruit slush is super easy to customize to your family’s fruit preferences. If you don’t like blueberries, skip them! Do you like raspberries or bananas, add them in!
Ingredients:
- 20oz frozen strawberries, thawed and roughly chopped
- 5oz blueberries
- 10oz frozen cherries, thawed and roughly chopped
- 1- 20oz can crushed pineapple
- 1- 12oz can orange juice concentrate, thawed
How to prepare Christmas fruit slush?
Maybe the simplest thing about this Christmas fruit slush is that it really is so simple to prepare. Literally, thaw the ingredients, dump them together, and mix. There really is no right or wrong to this recipe, so feel free to switch up the fruit combinations to your liking.
Storing Christmas fruit slush
After I mix all of the ingredients together, I just dump the whole mixture into a freezer safe gallon size bag and throw it in the freezer until Christmas day.
Although we primarily eat this at Christmas, it would also be so refreshing on a hot summer day. I would recommend freezing it in individual portion sizes to quickly thaw out and eat.
