Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and I love to read picture books that help us remember and celebrate the day. Gratitude is such a valuable and beautiful characteristic in the life of anyone and I believe that is is so important that we start teaching children to be grateful at a very young age.

Although thankfulness is something that should be practiced every day, there is something special about a time of focused Thankfulness in November each year. Here are some of our favorite books for Thanksgiving.

  1. Give Thanks to the Lord by Karma Wilson

This book is based on Psalm 92 and is such a sweet reminder to give thanks to the Lord for His many blessings in our lives.

2. In November by Cynthia Rylant

This book invite you into the cozy days of fall and culminates in the joy of family, food, and time spent together on Thanksgiving day. One of my favorites.

3. Thanksgiving is Here! by Diane Goode

A fun, silly spin on the preparations for Thanksgiving day. The illustrations will capture the attention of even the youngest readers.

4. Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson

We love the Bear books so much and this one is no different. Follow along as bear says “thanks” for each of the gifts his forest friends bring to him.

5. Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf

Join a little boy and his family as they prepare for their annual Thanksgiving Day celebration – in the woods. A delightful tale of family, community, and traditions.

6. We Give Thanks by Cynthis Rylant

I love this book because it teaches even the youngest readers that we can be thankful for even the smallest things in our lives.

7. A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting

Join Mr. Moose as he goes searching for a turkey for Thanksgiving and watch out for the surprise twist at the end.

8. This is the Feast by Diane Shore

This is a delightful, rhyming book that tells the story of the pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving in a way that even small children will understand.

9. Sharing the Bread by Pat Zietlow Miller & Jill McElmurry

A delightful story of a family preparing the Thanksgiving meal together.
