Simple Cut Out Sugar Cookies

These buttery soft sugar cookies are delightfully simple to make, delicious, and perfect for little hands to help with.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 2 2/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
Frosting
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 TB powdered sugar
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Method
 

  1. Combine wet ingredients. In a large bowl beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well.
  2. Add dry ingredients. Mix in flour baking powder, and salt until a soft dough forms. The dough should be smooth and easy handle.
  3. Shape and chill the dough. Form the dough into a disk and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Chill for 30 minutes up to 3 days. This makes it slightly easier to roll and cut out shapes.
  4. Roll and cut. Lightly dust the counter with flour and roll the dough out until it is about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes and place on parchment lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake cookies. Preheat oven to 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes, just until the edges are set. Being careful not to over bake.
  6. Let cool completely before frosting.
Frosting
  1. Beat the butter with electric mixer until fluffy.
  2. Add vanilla, stir.
  3. Add powdered sugar one cup at a time until smooth.
  4. Add milk and beat until light and fluffy.
